Help Your Neighbor

The habit of helping your neighbor enables you to grow in virtue, which leads to true happiness. Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan to show us how we should help our neighbor (Luke 10:29-37). The goal of this habit is to treat others with mercy like the Good Samaritan, and the following are examples of ways to help your neighbor every day:

  • Practice corporal works of mercy:

    • Feed the hungry.

    • Give drink to the thirsty.

    • Shelter the homeless.

    • Visit the sick.

    • Visit the prisoners.

    • Bury the dead.

    • Give alms to the poor.

  • Practice spiritual works of mercy:

    • Counsel the doubtful.

    • Instruct the ignorant.

    • Admonish the sinner.

    • Comfort the sorrowful.

    • Forgive injuries.

    • Bear wrongs patiently.

    • Pray for the living and the dead.

  • Love better with all love languages:

    • Giving gifts

    • Doing acts of service

    • Spending quality time

    • Speaking words of affirmation

    • Offering appropriate physical touch
