Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office)

The Liturgy of the Hours (aka. Divine Office) is the daily prayer of the Church (the whole people of God) to sanctify the day with prayer in keeping with 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to "Pray without ceasing." While Catholic priests and deacons are required to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, the Christian laity are encouraged to join in reciting the Liturgy of the Hours as well.

Using the Divine Office website or the Divine Office app on the App Store or Google Play is a recommended way to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Start by praying the Invitatory and one of the early major hours, then grow the habit after some consistency by adding other major hours and eventually the minor hours as well. These are the prayers and approximate times when they should be prayed:

  • 6am - Office of Readings (major hour)

  • 6am - Morning Prayer or Lauds (major hour)

  • 9am - Midmorning Prayer or Terce

  • 12pm - Midday Prayer or Sext

  • 3pm - Midafternoon Prayer or None

  • 6pm - Evening Prayer or Vespers (major hour)

  • 9pm - Night Prayer or Compline
